The causeway runs parallel to the B4447 Moor Road for about 350m between the Pound and the High Street. It is the only driving route into or out of Cookham village when the three usual roads (B4447, A4094 Ferry Lane, A4094 Sutton Road) are closed by flooding of the River Thames. This happens when the river rises to a height of 1.180m. The causeway is above the water level when the river is 1.460m high, but if the river rises further would eventually close too.
During a flood, when all three roads are closed, limited access to the causeway will be given for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes between 7am and 7pm (11pm on Friday and Saturday). During these times, pedestrians are asked to wait to cross until traffic has been suspended. In addition, on school days, there are 45 minute pedestrian-only periods (see timetable below) at the start and end of the school day. Diversions and road closures are normally published on the Borough Council website.
Please take care on the causeway. It is a narrow unfenced road and the water on either side can be fast flowing and 5 ft deep.
On 9th December 2014, the highway authority at RBWM announced the following planned opening times for the causeway when all three roads into Cookham village are closed by flooding.

Temporary traffic lights will be used to control vehicle movements. These traffic lights will be
manually controlled by the Borough's contractors, with radio contact to ensure safety. Pedestrians will be marshaled by staff from the Odney Club and Chartered Institute of Marketing, supported by community volunteers. To volunteer to help marshal pedestrians, contact the Parish Clerk (01628 522003). RBWM provide training for all marshals.
During the hours of darkness the causeway will be floodlit using generators placed along the edge of the route.
